Top 10 of 2012: Lipglosses

Top 10 of 2012: Lipglosses

These are ten fantastic shades of gloss that I reviewed and tested in the past year.  You’ll notice that there are a few from Bobbi Brown’s High Shimmer range, and let’s just say it was hard not to include more!

What was your favorite lipgloss from 2012?

Top 10 of 2012: Makeup Palettes

Top 10 of 2012: Makeup Palettes

There were actually a lot of fantastic palettes released this year! I already pulled up twenty that to consider for the top ten, and I had only reached August (I go backwards).  So here are my picks–and I tried to include a variety of brands that were all excellent, but full disclosure: could have easily included more bareMinerals, Guerlain, and another Tom Ford (Enchanted).

What was your favorite makeup palette from 2012?

Chanel Raffinement Eyeshadow Quad

Chanel Raffinement Eyeshadow Quad
Chanel Raffinement Eyeshadow Quad

Chanel Raffinement Eyeshadow Quad ($58.00 for 0.24 oz.) is described as a palette of “rich mauve, pearly pink beige, shimmering lilac, and deep eggplant.”  It’s a new for spring but will be joining the permanent range.

The first shade (top, left) is a medium-dark brown with hints of plum/mauve and a frosted finish. It had nice color payoff, and it applied smoothly and evenly. Chanel Variation has a darker brown. MAC Smut is a richer version of this shade. Urban Decay Stray Dog is similar, perhaps a bit warmer.

The second shade (top, right) is a pale, peachy beige with a frosted sheen and subtle warm undertones. The pigmentation was lovely, and it applied nicely. MAC A Natural Flirt is warmer, more shimmer. MAC Double Feature #5 is similar but less frosted. Urban Decay Sellout is similar–a little darker. Illamasqua Slink is a touch warmer.

The third shade (bottom, left) is a medium-dark cognac brown–a little orange-red to it but very, very subtle and slight, so it doesn’t take on an overly warm coloring. It had fantastic color payoff, and it was really soft, finely-milled, and smooth when applied. Too Faced Hot Cocoa is lighter. Illamasqua Focus is a cream product, and it is redder. Tom Ford Platinum is similar but a cream product. Urban Decay Wreckage is less red-toned.

The fourth shade (bottom, right) is a deep, dark reddened brown with a satiny sheen–just a step or two above matte. This shade packed quite the punch of pigment; really don’t need much to define the crease at alL! It blended out easily, which is absolutely necessary with anything that’s very pigmented and/or dark in color. Make Up For Ever #162 is matte, slightly richer/more intense. theBalm Presto is a bit darker. MAC Embark is matte and browner. Chanel Ebloui is more shimmery, a touch lighter, and a cream. It compares favorably with Tom Ford Enchanted.

I can see some looking at this quad and going, “Borrrrring!” and others reaching for it all the time. That’s the problem with basics and essentials–they tend to be kind of boring, but they work well and are still shades that most core collections have. I think it is wearable on both cooler and warmer complexions, and the colors offer a good range of light/dark for contrast.  The depth and richness of the darkest shade makes this quad as wearable for work as it does for evening, because it’s so rich, it can really add definition, darkness, and general smokiness for an evening look.

The quality of the quad is lovely, with all four shades having great color payoff, soft, smooth textures, and tip-top wear of eight hours (without a primer) and no signs of fading or creasing.  There was only a very, very slight excess of powder in a couple of shades but so slight–it’s really being nit-picky. All in all, while dupable, a very wearable, easy-to-use quad that will be a nice travel pick as well as a go-to for anyone who is need of more work-friendly shades.

Chanel Accessoire Le Vernis / Nail Colour

Chanel Accessoire Le Vernis / Nail Colour

Chanel Accessoire Le Vernis / Nail Colour ($26.00 for 0.40 fl. oz.) is described as a “deep red brown.” It is a deep, red-toned brown with a cream finish. It’s almost a perfect balance of red and brown, so it yields something very rich and lush but deep and dark all the same. MAC Dim the Lights is browner. Barielle Wool You Marry Me is a smidgen darker but very comparable. Rescue Beauty Lounge Atame is much darker and more red-toned. Rescue Beauty Lounge Moulin Rouge is a bit darker.

Oh, Accessoire was head-to-toe luxury–fantastic formula with opaque color in two coats (nearly in one!) with a consistency that was balanced between thick and thin. The polish flowed beautifully across the nail without streaking, bubbling, or pooling along the edges.  It dried down to a naturally shiny finish, too.  I typically get a week of wear out of Chanel’s formula with no chipping (just minor tip wear). It’s absolutely the kind of shade that makes up a core color range, so you may, in fact, have something already like it, but if you don’t, consider it a color (whether this particular Chanel or a lookalike) to add to your color wardrobe.

Chanel Or Rose Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner

Chanel Or Rose Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner
Chanel Or Rose Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner

Chanel Or Rose Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner ($30.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “light rosy beige.” It’s a warm, golden copper; I didn’t get real rosiness–more a mix of champagne, gold, and a copper/bronze aspect that gave it a darker coloring. I couldn’t think of anything similar to this, as nothing in the champagne/nude family compared, and even in my gold eyeliner stash, nothing was quite right (most were much yellower).

I was so hoping to love this, because “rosy beige” sounded like a great way to brighten and open up eyes, but the drier consistency of this made it difficult to apply on the lower lash line. There was a fair amount of pulling and tugging–just not all that comfortable to use. Even swatching, it dragged a little, and the kind of pressure one uses to swatch on the arm is so much more than the amount used on the lash line or lid!

It looked ragged when applied; you know when an eyeliner drags and pulls, so the end result isn’t all that even–the line isn’t crisp and not fully opaque.  The color was great, but the texture needed to be a lot smoother so it could glide on better.  What I did manage to apply stayed on well, though, and I still had the same amount on my lower lash line after eight hours. I couldn’t get this to apply the waterline, though; it just wouldn’t deposit color at all.

Chanel Frivole Joues Contraste / Blush

Chanel Frivole Joues Contraste / Blush
Chanel Frivole Joues Contraste / Blush

Chanel Frivole Joues Contraste / Blush ($43.00 for 0.21 oz.) is described as a “luminous apricot.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark orange with just a hint of pink to give it an “apricot” coloring. The finish is mostly matte, but there is a touch of barely-there sheen that translates as “natural” when applied–you can see the tiny golden sheen in the blended out swatch. Buxom Euphoria is lighter and more orange. MAC Modern Mandarin is redder, less orange, more shimmery. NARS Gilda is redder. Guerlain Peach Boy is redder, less orange. MAC Optimistic Orange is a touch more orange (and it is a cream blush). Make Up For Ever is a touch darker and more red-toned.

It is as intense as you’d like it to be; it can be as rich and bright as it looks in the pan, or it can be blended and applied more sheerly for a softer color. Darker complexions should have no trouble getting enough color to show up on them, while paler complexions can rest easy knowing that it has an exquisite, finely-milled texture that makes blending a cinch. The powder is so, so soft but not powdery. It looks luminous and subtly glowy on the skin without emphasizing pores. Frivole wore for seven hours well, and after eight, there was very slight fading along the edges.
