Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lip Gloss

Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lip Gloss

Launch Date: July 2011 at all Bobbi Brown counters, bobbibrown.com

Fun is what Bobbi had in mind when she created High Shimmer Lip Gloss. This new formula features a special mix of pearls in a clear base for the ultimate in shimmer, shine and color. Plus, it’s good for lips too thanks to moisturizing emollients and Vitamins C and E that condition and offer antioxidant protection. Bonus: After countless requests from lip gloss aficionados, Bobbi’s sized up all her glosses—including High Shimmer Lip Gloss—and added a convenient doe foot applicator. High Shimmer Lip Gloss is perfect for a night out on the town, special occasions, or simply when you’re in the mood for something fabulous.

Bobbi Brown Bare Sparkle High Shimmer Lip Gloss

Bobbi Brown Bare Sparkle High Shimmer Lip Gloss

Bobbi Brown Bare Sparkle High Shimmer Lip Gloss

Bobbi Brown Bare Sparkle High Shimmer Lip Gloss ($23.00 for 0.24 fl. oz.) is described as a “champagne with pearl.” High Shimmer Lip Glosses are supposed to have “light-catching shimmer with lasting, non-sticky shine” that will “moisturize, condition, and protect lips.” All of Bobbi Brown’s lipglosses now feature a doe-footed applicator (and they’re all a whopping 0.24 fl. oz. now).

Bare Sparkle is silver and champagne glittered gloss with flecks of copper thrown in, and all three hues of micro-glitter are suspended in a–virtually–colorless base. The way these sparkle reminds me of Chanel Glossimers–less color but lots of shine and glitz. As far as I can infer from the description, these are expected to run sheer in color.  It is easily duped, because ultimately it’s shimmer and no distinguishable color (just look in the Sheer Lipgloss gallery, and there are dozens of similar shades).

The formula is medium-thickness, and it applies evenly without trouble (probably helped by the fact there isn’t any real color!). It’s non-sticky, but it wears around four hours for me.  It smells like mint, but it’s not overwhelming or sweet, though there is no noticeable taste.  It wears well, and it doesn’t dry out lips–a little moisturizing, not ultra hydrating or a replacement for a real lip balm.

The most surprising element about this gloss is how noticeable, yet fine, the glitter particles are. Often, glosses chocked full of glitter are fun to wear initially, but the aftermath of traveling and/or gritty leftover glitter makes them a nuisance as they wear away. These are so much better! I didn’t experience any wayward glitter as it faded away (aka, I didn’t find glitter that was once in my gloss on my nose!), and it never felt gritty or rough, even as the gloss itself waned.

Bobbi Brown Soft Nude Rich Lip Color

Bobbi Brown Soft Nude Rich Lip Color

Bobbi Brown Soft Nude Rich Lip Color ($22.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “light, nude brown.” It doesn’t read that way to me–I would describe it as a rosy brown. If I wanted to stretch that, perhaps a rosy brown nude, but I don’t know if I’d use the word “light” to describe this. I was expecting more of a soft, peachy-beige kind of color.

Nonetheless, it’s rosy brown in the tube, swatch, and when worn. It delivers opaque color coverage with little product, and it has a creamy finish with a subtle shine. MAC Gem of Roses is a touch pinker. MAC Impressive is a little browner. Bobbi Brown Heather Pink looks very similar on.

The texture is creamy but lightweight, and the wear comes in at five hours. Bobbi Brown’s Rich Lip Colors are scent- and taste-free. This is one of my favorite formulas for creamy, semi-matte lipsticks, because it’s moisturizing, longer-wearing, and opaque in color (which is a personal preference!).

Bobbi Brown Sand Tortoise Shell Eye Palette

Bobbi Brown Sand Tortoise Shell Eye Palette

Bobbi Brown Sand Tortoise Shell Eye Palette

Bobbi Brown Sand Tortoise Shell Eye Palette ($60.00 for 0.32 oz.) contains eight eyeshadows: Ivory (creamy white), Hot Stone (medium brown), Terracotta (warm golden nude), Desert Sand (golden beige), Antique Rose (warm pink nude), Black Chocolate (black brown), Sandy Rose (brown bronze), and Gold Bar (pale gold).

Here’s a quick breakdown of Bobbi Brown’s finishes: regular eyeshadows have a matte finish, which means no shimmer; sparkle eyeshadows are glittery and have a translucent base to allow it to glide onto the lid; metallic eyeshadows are richly pigmented with a bright sheen; and shimmer wash eyeshadows are sheer and lightly pearlized.

  • Ivory is a pale, creamy white with a matte finish. There is a softness to it that keeps it from being powdery or chalky. This is a regular (matte) eyeshadow and is part of the permanent range. Inglot #351 is similar but less warm.
  • Hot Stone is a medium-dark brown with a hint of gray. This is a regular (matte) eyeshadow and is part of the permanent range. It’s a little darker than MAC Omega but lighter than MAC Charcoal Brown. Inglot #361 is less brown but similar.
  • Terracotta is a lightened orange with a matte finish. This is a regular (matte) eyeshadow. MAC Samoa Silk is lighter and brighter. Inglot #368 is closer, but it’s more orange.
  • Desert Sand is a pale champagne-gold with a bright, metallic sheen. This is a metallic eyeshadow. Urban Decay Blunt is similar but more golden. MAC Retrospeck also seems similar.
  • Antique Rose is a medium-dark peach-beige with a matte finish. This is a regular (matte) eyeshadow. Inglot #337 is similar but not as pink.
  • Black Chocolate is a blackened brown with a matte finish–it looks more charcoal than brown, though. This is a regular (matte) eyeshadow and is part of the permanent range. I couldn’t think of a dupe for this, just because it’s more gray-black than black-brown, but it’s very, very dark.
  • Sandy Rose is a soft, light beige-taupe with a metallic sheen. This is a metallic eyeshadow. Inglot #402 is a bit darker but still similar.
  • Gold Bar is a sheer white gold with lots of fine gold shimmer. This is a sparkle eyeshadow. Sparkle eyeshadows are supposed to be sheer, but this felt a little dusty and uneven overall–not just sheer. MAC Nylon is similar but has a whiter base color.

Overall, I think this palette is better than the Bronze Tortoise palette, because it has a better variety in finishes as well as the shades are more diversified, which makes it a more versatile palette in comparison.  The only troublemaker was Gold Bar, which despite the Sparkle finish, seemed uneven, and it was prone to fall out.  Ivory and Terracotta seemed a touch under-pigmented but just barely.

Unfortunately, the product sample I received to review did not come with a box, and the label on the back of the compact had sample labeling, so I couldn’t get an ingredients’ list or how much product was in it. I called my local Bobbi Brown counter and asked, and they said that the regular eyeshadows (mattes) contain 0.04 oz., sparkle finishes contain 0.02 oz., metallic finishes contain 0.05 oz., and shimmer wash finishes contain 0.05 oz. This palette contains 5x regular, 1x sparkle, and 2x metallic, which ends up being the equivalent value of: $50 in regular eyeshadows, $3.69 in sparkle eyeshadows, and $20 in metallic eyeshadows. All in all, this palette contains $73.69 worth of product.

Bobbi Brown Bronze Tortoise Shell Eye Palette

Bobbi Brown Bronze Tortoise Shell Eye Palette

Bobbi Brown Bronze Tortoise Shell Eye Palette

Bobbi Brown Bronze Tortoise Shell Eye Palette ($60.00 for 0.32 oz.) is new and limited edition for fall and contains eight eyeshadows: Banana (buttery cream), Olive (golden olive), Gold Nugget (yellow gold), Bronze (true bronze), Tiger’s Eye (golden copper), Copper Cocoa (light chocolate brown), Espresso (dark chocolate brown), and Amber (pink bronze).

  • Banana is a darkened butter yellow with a matte finish. This has a matte finish. It had nice color payoff and applied smoothly, softly, and didn’t feel powdery.
  • Gold Nugget is a sheer, yellowed gold color base with yellow gold glitter and shimmer. This has a sparkle finish. The color payoff is low here, which makes some sense if it’s supposed to have a “translucent base,” though I’m not entirely certain that these are supposed to be sheer. To me, this didn’t feel like a regular sparkle–it felt smoother. It’s a lot like MAC Goldmine.
  • Olive is a dirty khaki bronze with a metallic sheen. This has a sparkle finish. It’s noticeably more pigmented than Gold Nugget, yet it, too, has a sparkle finish. There is a little sheerness still. It is similar to Make Up For Ever #148 and a little less brown compared to Giorgio Armani #6.
  • Bronze is a red-toned bronze brown with a high-shine, metallic sheen. This has a metallic finish. This shade had nice color payoff. It’s a little less amber compared to Giorgio Armani #5. Inglot #406 is similar but richer. This seems like it would be similar to MAC’s Woodwinked.
  • Tiger’s Eye is an orange-y brown with a frosty finish. This has a metallic finish. It seemed less metallic, more frost to me. It had nice color payoff. Milani Bronze Doll is a lighter version but comparable in overall tone and color.
  • Espresso is a deep black-brown. This has a matte finish. It has really nice color payoff, but it looks a lot darker swatched than in the pan. This shade is part of the permanent range.  It seems comparable to MAC’s Showstopper.
  • Copper Cocoa is a warm, chocolate bronze with a subtle, pearly sheen. This has a shimmer wash finish. If shimmer washes are supposed to be sheer, this is quite off the mark. It’s one of the more pigmented shades in the palette. It’s a little warmer and lighter than Inglot #409.
  • Amber is a semi-sheer, orange-peach with gold and copper shimmer-sparkle. This has a shimmer wash finish. It’s sheer and has bits of sparkle that do leave some fall out when used. Urban Decay Blaze is similar but without the glitter/sparkle.

This palette contains 2x regular, 2x sparkle, 2x metallic, and 2x shimmer wash, which ends up being the equivalent value of: $20 in regular eyeshadows, $7.38 in sparkle eyeshadows, $20 in metallic eyeshadows, and $25 in shimmer wash eyeshadows. All in all, this palette contains $72.38 worth of product.

This is a warmer palette–very bronze indeed–that will suit medium to dark skin tones with yellow undertones best, but I do think it’s suitable for lighter complexions as a few of the shades are softer/sheerer.  There are at least two shades (Gold Nugget and Tiger’s Eye) that I could see turning rather orange on pinker complexions, though.  Fans of bronzes, earth tones, and metallic-like finishes will find this palette right up their alley, but those who prefer softer, subtler finishes may find this one too sparkly.
