Bobbi Brown Peony & Python Eyeshadow Palette
Bobbi Brown Peony & Python Eyeshadow Palette

Bobbi Brown Peony & Python Eyeshadow Palette

Bobbi Brown Peony & Python Eyeshadow Palette ($50.00 for 0.24 oz.) is a new and limited edition cool-toned palette for spring. The palette includes these shades: Opal (cool pale grey), Lavender (light lavender), Cool Ivory (grey-ish tan), Cobra (medium cool grey), Plum Orchid (deep black plum), and Eclipse (blackest black).

  • Opal is a soft, silvered gray with beige and a frosted finish. It was nicely pigmented.
  • Lavender is a pink-tinged lavender with a frosted metallic finish. This is a metallic eyeshadow. The pigmentation was spot-on.
  • Cool Ivory is a cool-toned grayish beige with a matte finish. It had a very smooth, silky texture and went on nicely.
  • Cobra is a slightly sheer bluish gray with sparkle. This is a shimmer wash eyeshadow, which is supposed to be sheer.
  • Plum Orchid is a blackened, deep purple with a matte finish. Unlike many of Bobbi Brown’s mattes, I felt this one was chalky and not nearly as pigmented as I would expect. It reminded me of my issues with NARS Daphne, but I did not feel like this worked beautifully when applied–it was still a bit chalky.
  • Eclipse is a dark black with a matte finish. It, too, was not nearly as buttery as Bobbi Brown’s mattes usually are. Eclipse was not nearly as frustrating as Plum Orchid, though, as it was more pigmented and applied better.

The palette contains 0.24 oz. worth of eyeshadow, which is an equivalent value of $40.00 of eyeshadow, $10.00 of shimmer wash eyeshadow, and $8.00 of metallic eyeshadow–plus two miniature sized brushes. The value of the palette is no less than $58.00, but I would say it’s a bit higher, with the brushes.

When I tried using the palette in an eye look, I found the colors seemed rather stubborn–they really did not want to play together.  I felt like the resulting look was rather muddy and trying to go back and deepen certain shades only made it look worse.

Bobbi Brown Peony & Python Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches

C
I went through and averaged the quality scores for the eyeshadows, which ended up being 22/30, even though two shades were below average. I think this palette is best for those with cool-toned skin, because of how cool the palette is overall.

Bobbi Brown Corrector & Concealer Kit
Bobbi Brown Corrector & Concealer Kit

Bobbi Brown Corrector & Creamy Concealer

Bobbi’s taken her number one beauty secret and made it even better. “This new formula gives you quick, perfect coverage. It’s rich and creamy without being thick—so it goes on easily and blends smoothly with minimal effort.” — Bobbi Brown

Reformulated to deliver perfect coverage, the new Correctors and Creamy Concealers erase dark circles as only Bobbi Brown can. Bobbi believes that the secret to covering dark circles lies in a unique two-step approach. She starts with pink- or peachtoned Corrector to brighten and neutralize the purple and green tones of under eye circles. For pale skin, she recommends the lighter Corrector shades starting with Porcelain Bisque. For deeper skin tones, she recommends the Medium to Dark Bisque and Peach Shades. Next, Bobbi uses yellow-toned Creamy Concealer to lighten and blend the under eye area with the rest of the face.

Bobbi Brown Peony & Python Kit
Bobbi Brown Peony & Python Kit

Neiman Marcus Exclusive: Bobbi Brown Peony & Python Kit

Bobbi Brown Peony & Python Beauty Kit ($95.00) is an exclusive set available at Neiman Marcus this spring. It contains a peony and python printed zippered makeup bag, Pink Peony Illuminating Bronzer, Pink Lilac Brightening Gloss, Black Mauve Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, and two miniature-sized makeup brushes (face and lip).

  • Pink Peony Illuminating Bronzer is a medium-dark pink with gold micro-glitter and sheen; it is slightly cool-toned, though it seems to shift between cool and neutral depending on how the light hits it. It applies rather sheerly but can be intensified for a more obvious blush.
  • Pink Lilac Brightening Gloss is an ultra sheer gloss that really has a clear base with pink and gold shimmer. This shade is available individually.
  • Black Mauve Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner is a blackened burgundy brown. This shade is available individually.
  • Eye/Lip Brush is a miniature-sized brush with a glossy black cap that slips on and off. It’s not officially labeled, but it seems like a really narrow lip brush–not quite small enough to be a true eyeliner brush though it does seem to resemble the Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush a bit.
  • Face Brush is a fluffy, dome-shaped brush that resembles the Face Blender Brush. It seems wider and less tapered, though. It was soft against the skin.

The kit itself comes with a high price tag, but individually (though not all shades are available individually, the product type is), Pink Peony Illuminating Bronzer would retail for $33, Pink Lilac Brightening Gloss retails for $22, Black Mauve Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner is available for $21, and then assume $20 worth of brushes. The innards of the kit are worth approximately $96, but you also receive the printed makeup bag, too. There is a Peony & Python printed makeup bag available alone for $40, but I don’t know how the size compares to the one from the Neiman Marcus kit.

B+
It's a cute kit, and if you like every product in it, the price tag doesn't seem so difficult to pay.  If you were hoping for a value-packed deal, this isn't quite it.  The kit will complement cooler skin tones.  I wish the Pink Peony Illuminating Bronzer was available individually!

Bobbi Brown Hydrating Gel Cream
Bobbi Brown Hydrating Gel Cream

Bobbi Brown Hydrating Gel Cream

Bobbi Brown Hydrating Gel Cream ($50.00 for 1.7 oz.) is an incredibly moisturizing cream with the texture of a gel/cream hybrid but all of the hallmarks of a water-based gel. It absorbs within a coupleof minutes, and it never feels greasy or heavy. I have normal-to-dry skin, and especially in the fall/winter, I do tend towards moderately dry. I used this for a month and a half (usually both in the morning and evening, which is why I finished it so quickly), and my skin drank it in.

It wore beautifully under makeup, because it dries down to a near matte finish and doesn’t have any slip, slide, or residual greasiness after application. The texture is more like a cream than gel, but it lacks the density of cream, so it also lacks the heaviness when applied–it has a comfortably lightweight feel. I was so pleased that it worked well in the mornings, though, because it is often the easiest for me to tell just how enduring a moisturizer is–some will leave my skin feeling parched by early afternoon, but this moisturizer worked around the clock. The Hydrating Gel Cream comes in a screw-top jar made out of a hard plastic. It has a clean scent–light herbal-citrus; just very fresh and subtle.

ingredients: Water, Capric Triglyceride, Tribehenin Peg-20 Esters, Butylene Glycol, Cyclohexasiloxane, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, Dimethicone, Imperata Cylindrica Root Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender), Elettaria Cardamomum (Cardamom), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary), Rosa Canina (Rose) Fruit Oil, Coriandrum Sativum (Coriander) Seed Oil, Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine), Cholesterol, Trehalose, Hydroxyproline, Proline, Caprylyl Glycol, Phytosphingosine, Phytantriol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Cyclopentasiloxane, Acrylates Copolymer, Linoleic Acid, Dimethiconol, PEG-8, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopherol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Glycine, Sodium Carbomer, Ascorbic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Citrate, Phenoxyethanol

By the by, are we not in the year 2011? Isn’t it about time beauty brands started listing ingredients online? I’m so beyond frustrated when I inquire via email/live chat only to be told to call some 1-800 number. Really — you think the best way to handle this is reading off a laundry list of hard-to-pronounce ingredients?

final thoughts: I love this for morning or evening, really. It makes for an excellent daytime moisturizer (assuming you use a separate SPF, of course!) for those with drier skin types that don’t want to wear a heavy cream underneath their makeup. For those with oilier skin with drier patches or still want a more hydrating moisturizer for the evening (but without the heaviness of true evening creams), I think this would work quite nicely.  This moisturizer strikes a good balance between hydration and texture.
