5 of My Favorite Neutral Eyeshadow Palettes

With so many neutral palettes available these days, it can be hard to keep them all straight! These are my current favorites that are permanent…

  1. Urban Decay Naked — the original is still a go-to for travel for me, though I love Naked2 and Naked3 as well
  2. LORAC Pro Palette — 16 shades of neutrals from matte to shimmer
  3. Chanel Raffinement — smokier, cooler neutrals
  4. bareMinerals The Truth — cooler-toned, darker neutrals
  5. LORAC Unzipped — warm, shimmery pinks, browns, and bronzes

Makeup Look: Makeup Geek Smoky Eye

Makeup Geek Smoky Eye Look

I haven’t done a smoky eye in awhile, so I wanted to try it with some of the products I had tested recently as well as with some shades I’ve worked with in the past. Then, I wanted to experiment with pairing a warmer lip with a smoky eye, as my typical go-to is something cooler-toned, like a rosy beige or more bubblegum-like pink.

Eyes

I first applied Makeup Geek Rockstar Eyeshadow on the inner third of the lid and blended upwards over the tear duct, towards the brow bone. Then, I patted on Makeup Geek Prom Night Eyeshadow to the center of the lid to brighten and create a gradient towards the outer lid. I used Makeup Geek Corrupt Eyeshadow to darken the outer corner and crease, which created a smoky effect. I softened the crease color’s edge by applying Burberry Trench Eyeshadow to the brow bone. I defined the lower water line with Marc Jacobs Beauty Blacquer Highliner Gel Crayon, and then I used bareMinerals Skinny Dip Eyeshadow smudged on the lower lashine.

Face

Guerlain Parure de Lumiere Foundation (002 and 003) set with Guerlain Les Voilettes Loose Powder. I applied Stila Kitten All-Over Shimmer on the tops of cheek bones.

Lips

I applied Guerlain Gaetane Rouge G Lipstick all over the lips, and then I topped it off with Bobbi Brown Citrus High Shimmer Lipgloss for added shimmer and shine.

bareMinerals The Glass Beach Eyeshadow Quad

bareMinerals The Glass Beach Eyeshadow Quad ($30.00 for 0.17 oz.) is a new, limited edition set of shades for summer. I came across this on QVC when I bought The Nude Beach palette. According to bareMinerals, it was inspired by the coast of Northern California. All four shades had a muted quality to them, which made them appear more muddied applied to the lid than anticipated, and the somewhat powdery texture of the shades seemed to compound this problem. It’s an interesting set of shades, but the texture of these really needs the help of a primer, which would help the color adhere better to the skin. I packed and packed Sea Glass on like no tomorrow but really couldn’t get it to appear as it does in the pan. bareMinerals’ Ready formula is one of my favorites, because it is very, very pigmented, applies beautifully without primer, and wears long without fading or creasing, but this quad fell so short compared to other palettes and quads.

bareMinerals The Nude Beach Eyeshadow Palette

bareMinerals The Nude Beach Eyeshadow Palette ($40.00 for 0.24 oz.) contains eight shades that were inspired by shades in bareMinerals’ loose eyeshadow range, and with the name, you can see that it’s a neutral-based palette. The quality is good overall, but the palette contains a lot of mid-tone eyeshadows, and I found myself really longing for one or two medium-dark to dark, satin-to-matte shades that would work to add more depth to any look. It is also a warm-toned palette, which there are many of on the market nowadays, so while lovely in many ways, it is ultimately a more dupable palette. I love the size of this style of palette that bareMinerals does, because each eyeshadow still has plenty of product (0.03 oz.), but they’re very compact and perfect for traveling. bareMinerals’ Ready eyeshadow formula is supposed to wear for 12 hours, yield “vivid, pure, provocative color,” and “resist creasing, fading, and smudging.”
