Bobbi Brown Twilight Nail Lacquer
Bobbi Brown Twilight Nail Lacquer

Bobbi Brown Twilight Nail Lacquer ($18.00 for 0.37 fl. oz.) is described as a “black chocolate plum.” It’s a deep burgundy-tinted brown with flecks of burgundy, red, and violet shimmer. The finish is just slightly metallic (and some brush strokes are visible under bright light). Rescue Beauty Lounge Atame is redder, less plum, no shimmer. Rescue Beauty Lounge Moulin Rouge is browner, no shimmer. Chanel Vertigo is grayer, less red-tones. Cult Nails Enigmatic is lighter. Estee Lauder Extravagant Night is very similar but has much chunkier sparkle–Twilight is subtle, Extravagant Night is over-the-top.

I can’t remember Bobbi Brown doing nail polish before–not as long as I have been following the brand. Does anyone else remember? The formula is on the thicker side, though it’s not so thick that it’s goopy or problematic. The thicker consistency allows for nearly opaque color coverage with just one coat, but I needed two for full opacity, which is what the swatches show. It dries to a noticeably shiny finish; a top coat would still be necessary for a high-gloss finish, though.  Since this formula is new-to-me, I tested out the wear of Twilight, and my results were a full week with no chipping and just minor tip wear; these results were the same whether I used a base/top coat or just applied to nails alone.

Twilight Night

It's a color that I don't have many dupes for, so I like it from that aspect. It's certainly appropriate for fall and will take you into the cooler temperatures of winter, too. The formula is good, but it's not perfect.

  1. I have this one and I think it’s an interesting shade for fall. I’m just not quite in the mood for it yet!

  2. Nicole

Nice color and I like the shimmer. But I think this is too dark to wear in a conservative company.

  3. I like it. It’s different!

  4. Ooh, this is so pretty! I can’t remember having seen a nail varnish from Bobbi before, either, though I don’t see why not — they clearly know how to mix up a great shade! ;)

The flecks and shimmer are really pretty in that last photo. In the rest of the photos, it resembles UD’s Rockstar eyeshadow in liquid form. However, in other blog photos I’ve seen, the colour looks a LOT more smoky brown than the smoky eggplant/burgundy that I’m seeing here. What is spectacular though is that Estée Lauder limited edition “Extravagant Night” polish that you have linked. Holy moly!!! Stunning. Truly stunning, but what an absolutely tiny amount at .3 fl. oz for $18!

  6. It looks so pretty in the bottle, but I’m not a fan of it on the nails at all!

I like it on the nails but I think it’s a lot prettier in the bottle. It’s not as purple on the nails and I think that really adds to the shade.

It’s nice, but I much prefer the way it looks in the bottle. It seems closer to the description on the nails, but I’d like it better if it was a bit lighter and more purple.

  8. It’s pretty, but not special enough for me to spend the extra $ on a high-end polish :/

Totally not in the mood for this right now!! :-) I still didn’t went on vacations so I’m all about summer feelings…but, the nail polish is lovely for winter.

  10. I have this polish and it does remind me of Chanel Vertigo, same feel to it as though they were from the same family. I personally love these types of colors because I think they add a little bit of edginess without being as obvious as say a black polish.

  11. Love the color, just wish it wasn’t $18 lol

  12. Chelsea

This is very different from any other color I have seen. Quite pretty!

  13. Dia

The multicolored shimmer in Twilight is really pretty.

I have a bottle of Ruby (I think that’s the name) from around 2006. I think Bobbi also had nail polish around 2002/3 and in 2007 as well. It doesn’t seem like polish has been a regular part of her lineup in the past five or so years.

It reminds me *alot* of Lancome Violine, which I still have, so I’ll pass. Also, I know it’s a petty thing, but I can’t get past the feeling she’s trying to capitalize on the Twilight series, in order to capture a younger market. I don’t know if that is the case, but that’s what comes to mind.

  15. Jun

Wow, I had no idea Bobbi Brown made nail polish! This looks like a great fall color.

  16. Avatar of Melissa divinem (Melissa)

It’s pretty but too dark to appreciate its intricacies at a distance. I think I’ll pass on this one.

  17. dana

    very vampy color

  18. Avatar of Paula PD

I wore a twinkly pink by BB for my wedding in ’99 :)

  19. Yellowlantern

Count me as another person who liked it better in the bottle than on the nail. It’s still a nice color though.

  20. It seems to lose its colour on your nails. I see so many darker shades like this where they look fabulous in the bottle and then the complexity is lost in the application. I’ll take a pass.

I dropped by Bobbi Brown about a week ago & flipped when I saw this nail polish. It’s absolutely gorgeous! I did buy it as I don’t have anything similar to it in my fairly large collection. The color does look more complex in the bottle than on the nails, as some people mentioned, but it really is a gorgeous shade on anyways. I swatches it instore and was very happy to see that it was totally opaque in one coat, unlike the horrid Deborah Lippmann Christmas collection nail polishes I tried which looked stunning in the bottle but were completely transparent. It also wears just as long as my other favorite nail polishes, keeping in mind I always use a base coat & top coat. I use Seche Vite fast dry top coat over everything, which ended up bringing out more of the complexity in the color once I applied it at home. I’ve been wearing it non-stop since I bought it. It’s the only BB product that really stood out for me amongst all of the products on offer for the holidays, and there were A LOT on display. This was the one & only nail color I didnt hesitate dropping over $20 on, which is extremely rare for me. Didn’t care for the matching Shimmer Ink in this shade, though. It was far too flat looking for me and none of the deep plummy tones came out in it once applied.
