Bobbi Brown Candlelight High Shimmer Lipgloss
Bobbi Brown Candlelight High Shimmer Lipgloss

Bobbi Brown Candlelight High Shimmer Lipgloss ($24.00 for 0.23 fl. oz.) is described as a “champagne glitter.” It’s a pale, golden beige with gold, champagne, and copper shimmer and sparkle. On lips, it adds a very subtle warmth, but it is primarily adding a glossy shine and a moderate amount of shimmer. It wears three hours on me and is lightly hydrating. MAC Impossibly Sweet (LE, $15.00) is very similar. MAC Pleasure Principle (LE, $20.00) is lighter. MAC Moth to Flame (P, $20.00) is warmer. MAC Phiff (LE, $20.00) is also warmer. See comparison swatches.

Pure Gold High Shimmer Lipgloss ($24.00 for 0.23 fl. oz.) is described as a “golden yellow shimmer.” It has a gold-tinged base that leans yellow and then is full of pale gold, medium gold, and copper shimmer and sparkle. On lips, it adds warmth, but again, primarily adds gold and copper shimmer/sparkle, plus a glossy shine. It wears just under four hours on me and was nicely hydrating while worn. I know you’re all wondering how similar is this to Canary (P, $24.00)? There is a difference between the two, to a degree, and the difference is more obvious when you look at the two tube-by-tube or swatch-by-swatch, but applied? Pure Gold just looks like a sheer application of Canary, and that sheerness is the primary difference: Pure Gold has finer shimmer and less of it; and yes, it is noticeably yellower overall, but when it is sheered out, you really can’t tell. I wouldn’t get Pure Gold; I love Canary and highly recommend that, so if you want a shimmery gold gloss, that’s the one I’d go for. See comparison swatches.

The High Shimmer Lipgloss formula is a long-time favorite–it sparkles, dazzles, and glimmers as the light reflects against it the most spectacular way.  It has a lightweight feel that’s comfortable, hydrating, and surprisingly long-wearing given that many are mostly shimmer without a lot of color.  The consistency is non-tacky, and the formula is mint-scented.  Both of these have less sparkle than some of the other shades, and it’s that high-sparkle content that does make these special and standout against other glosses.

Bobbi Brown also released Rose as part of the Old Hollywood collection, which I don’t have at the moment but purchased earlier this week–looks like it doesn’t show up until sometime next week, but when it does, you can bet I’ll be testing it!

I’m just kind of meh on products like this. I know some people love them, and some people love layering them but I always find myself wishing they applied exactly like they look in the tube (the way something like Illamasqua Opulent does), it’s a bit the way the old blue Lancome Juicy Tube made me feel from ‘Wow it’s BLUE’ to ‘Oh, it’s sheer and not really anything special’…

    • I think these are more “boring” in the sense that they’re not loaded with enough sparkle to make them look more different applied – sheer gold is still sheer gold – but like Canary is full of gold sparkle and is quite dazzling on its own or layered (and these are designed to be worn on their own or layered, so something like Opulent would be *too* much for layering really – you can, it’s just not as easy to do so!).

I don’t own it but I like how Canary looks because you could wear it alone and the glitter looks really noticeable whereas with products like this it just doesn’t seem worth it…

I have tried layering with Opulent, the result was ‘chunky’ not ‘opulent’….

  2. Been waiting for your review on these, Christine. :) I was thinking of getting Pure Gold, and now that I’ve seen swatches, I don’t think it’s worth purchasing anymore. Canary’s indeed a better choice. I have one and love it to bits!

I bought the other 2 colors of the trio, both really nice to wear alone or on top of other colors.
Candlelight and Rose, longlasting subtle touch of shimmer

Much prefer the look of Pure Gold to Canary. I’ve always found Canary to be too full on. I prefer my sparkly lipglosses to be more toned down, sheer and shimmery than in your face obvious glitter. I’ll be looking into getting Pure Gold.

    • Sounds like Pure Gold is perfect for you! From what I get from the info on these, they’re supposed to be more OTT sparkly glosses (compared to say her regular shimmer glosses), so that’s why these weren’t a hit to me!

  5. Love the shimmer in these!

  6. Pure gold would be gorgeous on top of a rich red or plum lipstick!

  7. Hmm not convinced by either of these. I’d probably use them to layer.

  8. I like ‘em! But I do think Canary is better, if you want to layer it over lipstick for a wow look, personally!

I was wondering how Candlelight looked, because I nabbed a Bobbi Brown gloss from their website a few days ago. In the end, I decided to go for Naked Plum over Candlelight because of your review of the former and I regret absolutely nothing. It’s GORGEOUS.

Christine, you look absolutely gorgeous and even better without your usual lower eyeliner! I don’t usually comment but this time I just have to. You look so fresh in this pictures.
