Chanel Dragon Rouge Allure Laque
Chanel Dragon Rouge Allure Laque

An Ode to Chanel Dragon Rouge Allure Laque

What would you do if one of your holy grail beauty products was discontinued? (And I’m sure that many of you have had it happen, so what did you actually do?)

About two weeks ago, I tweeted that Chanel Customer Service confirmed, via email, that all but Coromandel were going to be discontinued in 2011. I called their customer service line to get confirmation through that route, just in case, and they had the reverse information–Coromandel was being discontinued but nothing else–but they said they would escalate my question up to corporate. Last Wednesday, I had to tweet confirmation by Chanel corporate that all shades (except Coromandel) were being discontinued in 2011.

Long-time readers know that Chanel Dragon (75) Rouge Allure Laque ($32.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is one of few holy grail products for me, and it really is; it’s the red I reach for on every special occasion. It’s my power red. There is no other lip color that garners as many compliments as this shade. So I did what any beauty addict would do: immediately bought back-ups upon back-ups. I haven’t finished my original tube of Dragon, though I suspect I am nearly the end, and had already repurchased a second tube for future use. I bought five more, though I plan to distribute a few of those to my favorite people this Christmas.  It’s still available (at least online) at Nordstrom and Saks.

Realistically, there are numerous other reds I love and enjoy, and while it may not be that on oh-my-goodness-this-is-perfect level, they’re close enough, and I’ll make it through. With luck, Chanel is replacing the RAL line-up with something bigger and better. With even better luck, I’ll discover a dupe or an even more fantastic red over time. Guerlain Garconne is the closest I’ve found so far.

I’m wearing red lipstick everyday without exception, my favourite being mac russian red and MUFE moulin rouge. Seeing how good this chanel one looked on you, I wanted to purchase it as a gift to myself when I’ll cure my year-long angular cheilitis (it sucks so much to have that, I always look like my lipstick ran in the corner of my mouth or like I’m trying to cover herpes!!), especially since I always dreamed of owning a chanel red lipstick. This morning I came across this post and OMG I planned to go buy it right after school, just in case! If that didn’t cost me a total of 47$ CAN, I would have bought backups because it is a PERFECT red!! Still not opening until my lips are healed though 😉

    • What have been your *least* favorite reds? 😉 Hope your lips heal soon!

      • Judith

Not counting the thousands of Maybelline/L’Oréal/Revlon/etc. I went through during my teen years (I started wearing red lipstick at 14, thanks to Gwen Stefani LOL) I would say, and this quite breaks my heart to admit, heartless by mac. I went to buy this one because it looked wonderful on you and it had Cruella on it and, while it looks beautiful freshly applied, it tends to feather (but I think I solved the problem with a clear lipliner used with the redd mac liner) and starts to look like a red lipgloss a little too quickly. I still wear it from times to times because it is a great color for a casual/summery red :)

  2. That looks eerily similar to NYX Snow White which I always have a hard time getting a hold of, not sure if it’s also gotten the boot.

    • Will have to look into it!

I think Europe in general tends to be really expensive, I do not get why, I mean Chanel and Guerlain are French brands but the normal price of a Guerlain lipstick in Hungary, where I live if higher than in the US, maybe taxes, exchange rates, etc. I have never tried this formula but think it would not be so great for me, Garconne is the perfect red for me, I have very fair skin but dark hair, eyes, brows and even though my skin is fair it has warmer tones. If I wore this with my pigmented lips I think it would look almost burgundy and make me look older but that is just my feeling at this point.

OTOH, I do love some cooler toned colors like violet-plums, I think I have mentioned how my addiction with Rouge Gs started when I got Bee, now I have to go out and try to find a backup of that, smaller stores here may be a good idea, even though it was a holiday 2010 limited ed I bought it last month and hopefully I can still find another one somewhere.

Why do they always discontinue the very best colors ever? Do they want to make them more special? But since we talked about them expiring that makes no sense because people may run out and buy backups now but otherwise they would keep on buying them.

Usually they come out with a replacement color but I have found that oftentimes those are not nearly as good as the one they discontinued. I think Guerlain has Gigolo now to replace Bee but Gigolo is not a color that would look good on me at all gggh.

I’ve read around, alot that NYX’s Snow White and MAC’s Dubonnet are dupes, and i own both Dubonnet and Dragon – i can say that they’re completely different. Dubonnet/Snow White would be much darker than Dragon, much less vibrant.

      • Ursula

If we talk about all these gorgeous reds; how many red lipsticks do you think a woman needs?:))) I feel guilty when buying the upteenth red shade but each is a little different, no? I mean no I do not have upteen but I feel seriously drawn to certain colors; reds are such and violet-plums as well. I also love bronze colors but not as much as the first two categories. Also, there are so many different reds like coral-red, true/pure red, blood red and the list goes on.

Christine, since this looks so amazing on you do you find this a blood red or a vibrant pure red? I am wondering how it would compare to Garconne. I know some said Garconne is orangey but it is not orangey on me at all, it is just what I would call a pure red, very vibrant and wow but I also like certain blood reds, I just tend to avoid reds leaning toward purple. I love purple but not purplish red or bluish red, I like violet-plums in purples as I have said.

Argh, now I feel tempted to try Dragon on, also love the name:)))

        • More of a vibrant pure red, but it’s deep and complex – but not really blood red to me. Garconne is quite similar on me, so if you find that more of a pure red, then I’d say this would be similar.

          • Ursula

I need to try it then, well, I do not need to at all, lol, but now I feel tempted. I will let you know what I think, hopefully I can still find it here but my experience has been that in Hungary cosmetics do not sell as fast and since I work in an office building attached to a mall, I can do this in my lunchbreak:)))

  3. It sounds like it is the end of the world on this blog that this product will be discontinued. I learned life goes on whether you like it or not. Maybe because I am older and I have experienced may discontinued items and out of market brands. That is why I always buy duplicates when I like something. I think these cosmetic brands purposely discontinue something to generate more interest in something else and also so they can reintroduce the product later in life. The companies make you want to buy more because there is chance your item you so like will be gone. This is an absolutely beautiful red….a color I would wear since I own 5 Dolce and Gabanna reds. I am sorry to see one of your favorite items go…but that is life and it will bring you memories later in life when you think of Chanel Dragon which is appropriate name in the Chinese culture. I miss my Halston blush.

    • Hi Stacey,

In the post, I said that I was gifting people (four, to be exact) some of the back-ups – and I also said that I anticipate I will either find a dupe or something new to love–that I’m not dying over it. I thought, of course, that readers would be interested in hearing about it (as it is the item I am written to about most) while providing updated photos and swatches of the product for anyone who wanted to snag one before it’s gone. I’m sorry you read it as the end of the world, because the very point of the post was that it wasn’t: there will be new items, dupes, and hopefully newer and better products in the future.

  4. Oh this is sad.. :( :( :( Just as when Im beginning to appreciate its color, Chanel just likes to discontinue stuff no?

  5. Rosie

I can’t believe Chanel would DC such a wonderful formula! Why would they even bother releasing a new shade for theie holiday collection? I hope they decide to keep them…probably my absolute favorite lipstick formula. Boo, Chanel!

  6. Emily

I just don’t get why they would discontinue such a beautiful colour! Fingers crossed for bigger and better replacements! =)

  7. can’t blame you – this looks just fabulous! definitely an eye-catching red lippie!

  8. Linda

oh wow… dragon is not my color, but I love my rouge allure laque in 74 (dynasty i think?) my tube is still quite full, but I wonder why they would discontinue such a great product…

this is a line I look forward to for new colors and such, so I’m quite sad they decided to do this.

  9. Venice

This breaks my heart more than “he” broke it. :( gotta stock up!

  10. Mini

AHH no! I love those laques, I might pass out! If it’s any consolation, Guerlain Garconne (at least in pictures) looks just as good on you!

  11. Mini

Oh and to the person that said stuff like this is no big deal…if my favourite foundation every got discontinued (Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua) I would freak the heck out, way way more than Christine…who actually didn’t freak out at all really. Actually this reminds me, Christine, have you tried Chanel’s perfection lumiere (that they brought out to replace pro lumiere?) and if so, any thoughts?

  12. Rosie

Christine, I haven’t kept up with makeup trends in a while so I’m very sad to come on and read about this being discontinued. I bought it two years ago for my birthday after seeing the shade on you. I’m almost out, I’ll have to hurry and snatch at least one up before it’s gone. You are looking lovely in these pictures :).

  13. helen

I have Dragon. When I saw this post, I marched almost straight away to the nearest mall. Nordstrom’s Chanel counter just received their newest product tester display case and unfortunately the RALs no longer have a spot. The SA/MA sees the new slots for the velvet mattes, but none for RALs which is definitely not a good sign. :(

I love this red on me. I also love the texture as regular lipstick usually dries my lips out. This lasts longer than gloss which would be the next closest way for me to wear any color lipstick product.

Dragon is also the MA’s favorite shade, too. She’s following my lead and getting backups. They were out ofpe stock in store so they are shipping 2 to me.

I’m hoping Three Custom Colors can dupe the color and the liquid lipstick texture. *fingers crossed* Or really hoping Chanel replaces RALs with something like it that’s as good or better.

  14. I am (more than a little) obsessed with red lipsticks, and I have certianly felt the pain when a red I really love gets discontinued.. I think above all other shades it’s one of the hardest to find the “perfect one” for you.

I used to love poppy king’s lipsticks and I was very sad when they were discontinued… and when they came back, under a different brand, and they even had my favourite shade again.. OH THE JOY!!!

So.. yes, losing a beloved product is very sad, but it makes it all the more exhilarating when you find the perfect replacement! 😀

  15. milkypop

Holy smackeroons, thank you for this important newsflash Christine! i’m also a Dragon devotee, although i own 8236384 red lipsticks in my drawer this one is just different in terms of both color and texture. This is an appeal to all who are sitting on the fence to get it, this is an incredible product. The red is extremely three-dimensional and like Christine i’ve always scored compliments with this.

  16. artemis

WOW! totally gorgeous! w.o shimmer it’s be like perfect 😀 looks so creamy yum

  17. Kat

Your lips look so perfect wearing Dragon. I bought it just yesterday because of this post, and I really like the color but the applicator kind of bugs me. It’s hard for me to apply it cleanly, it ends up feathering at the edges and looking a little messy :( Any tips?

  18. I just bought Dragon yesterday after obsessively reading your reviews and I’m madly in love with it. So much so in fact that I want to wear it every day all the time-which is probably not a very good idea as it is rather expensive! I love red lipstick and this is perfect. I’m torn between buying another tube as backup or using up this one and trying Guerlain Garconne. What do you think? Will my one tube last for a while enough to wear semi regularly?

    • Oooh, I’m so glad you love it, Laura! Happy and sad, I suppose!

Garconne is more expensive ($46), so if you can, Chanel would be cheaper – and I’m not entirely sure if Garconne is LE or not :( I think one tube SHOULD last for a good while, but I’m not 100% sure.

  19. Nichole

I just got back from my Chanel counter in Macy’s to get backups of Dragon and Coromandel. There was a Chanel rep there who said they were all being discontinued.

  20. Michelle

I could never pull off wearing a red that vibrant and deep (or any red, for that matter…makes me look like a little girl trying on her mother’s makeup), but gosh does that look absolutely gorgeous on you!

  21. Kat

This is so sad to hear. I will be buying this today! I was wondering, when you wear this lipstick, does it smear or rub off your lips when you eat or drink?

  22. Francesca

Hi Christine! Today I’ve tried Dragon laque and I think it’s REALLY similar to the combo “ultra vinyl lip pencil, n°02 Fancy red+ Nano lip pencil, n°09 pleasant plum” all by sephora. I suggest you to try it 😉

  23. do you kno if the CHANEL ROUGE ALLURE EXTRAIT DE GLOSS is being discontinued as well or is it just CHANEL ROUGE ALLURE LAQUE LUMINOUS SATIN LIP LACQUER?

  24. Joy

Just ordered it from Nordstrom.com. Back ordered until 12/09. I’m supposed to be on a no-buy until 2012 but the word “discontinued” is just so final lol and it’s so gorgeous.

  25. Leah

I’ve been wanting this for so long and finally ordered it today after this news. I figure I’d better get it while I can, I just hope I don’t fall completely in love with it.

  26. Andrea

I had been lemming this for literally months but put off buying it since it’s so expensive ($42 CAD plus 12% tax) but when I saw your news about it being discontinued my heart sank. I immediantly ran out and bought two. I can’t even afford that $94 price tag right now but this was *important* damnit, haha. I actually managed to snag the last two in the only Chanel booth in my city, so glad I did!!!

  27. KD

Christine I strongly urge you to check out Sephora Brand Lip Vinyl in Fancy Red. On me this and the Chanel Dragon are the EXACT same shade.
Maybe it will be the same for you! And it’s waaaaaaay cheaper!

    • Thanks for the suggestion, KD!

    • Maybe cheaper which is fine and matching shade. But I think Chanel Rouge Allure Laquer whatever the shade it has to do with the application, the design of the tube and the name. Not trying to be snob…but it is like owning a real Chanel purse vs. a knockoff from Canal Street in NYC.

      • KD

I wasn’t suggesting it because it’s cheaper, I was suggesting it because it is similar to a product that she loves, which is being discontinued. The price is just a bonus.
It’s not as if it says Chanel all over her lips.

        • Haha! That is the one thing about designer makeup — who’s going to know??

        • If that was the case, no one would buy designer cosmetics. It is not just final result, but the experience, the ownership, and the “let me show you what I am wearing” attitude as the makeup is applied in the women’s bathroom. Besides, the packaging for the lip lacquer is darling and irreplaceable.

          • KD

Showing off the brand of your beauty products doesn’t strike me as something that is important to Christine (based on everything I’ve read over the past few years), but to each her own!

  28. tracy

OMG! u weren’t kidding how awesomely u rock that red! do u normally wear it alone or over something else? is it drying at all? does it stain?

    • Not drying at all, and I usually wear on its own. I’ve wore it over lip liner, and it’s worn for 16 hours (literally from 7AM to just before midnight) without reapplication and through meals. It does stain a bit!

  29. abby

that is simply gorgeous on you christine!

  30. Julie M

I’ve never in my life purchased any Chanel products due to the incredibly high costs in Denmark. But yesterday evening I took the plunge and bought this beautiful laque! I’m waiting for it to arrive in the mail along with the Chanel Poudre Universelle which I’ve heard wonderful things about as well! I figured since I already had the wallet out… LOL!
This is such a gorgeous red on you and my heart skipped a beat when I saw your post, Christine, because I’ve had this on my wishlist for quite some time! I’m glad I went ahead and bought it, and maybe it will give me the courage to finally try some bold lips – at least for the holidays :) I’m envisioning this red lip with flawless and slightly highlighted skin and a classic 50’s cateye! Oh the joys of makeup…

  31. Do you happen to know if that is worldwide? I am so confused, I asked at… our version of Sephora only more highend? Anyways, they said it’s in store, they can order more and they have never heard of it being discontinued.

  32. What? Noooooo…I’m in the midst of saving for this baby and it better not run out by the time I have saved my pennies!!!

  33. jeanette

thanks so much for the heads up christine!!! this was on my “try and buy later” list but after your post this week, i bought it online right away. it’s already on backorder on nordie’s website and it was sold out everywhere at my local stores!

i’ve been buying more reds lately and i know i won’t regret buying this one. whenever you rate things “A” or higher i know it’s gotta be good since you try basically everything. =)

it looks so dazzling on you by the way!

  34. Angelcat47

Three Custom Color Specialists(threecustomcolor.com)will recreate a color makeup item with a tiny sample of the original, although they have many formulas on file,so you may not have to do that. They can also change the finish of a formula,so if you have a matte lipstick in your perfect color but always wanted to try it as a frost, you can!! They also sell their own line of cosmetics.

  35. DCB

I ordered this particular shade a few days ago, only to receive an email from Nordstrom saying it’s discontinued. :'(

  36. Zulaikha

oh nooooo!!!! i was planning on buying it. Christine u really should do something about this! talk to the Chanel marketing group or find a dupe for me!!! please!!

  37. Maybe in a few years you’ll have to hit up Three Custom Color Specialists and have them re-create it for you :)

  38. Rosie

I finally purchased this color. I had to hunt it down because the 1st 3 stores I went to were all sold out of this color and I was told they’re discontinuing it :( I’m so thankful I was able to get my hands on this before it officially is unavailable. I have to admit I haven’t wore this out yet, but I’m very eager to do so!!!!

  39. Elisabeth

Thank you Christine! I went and got Dragon :) It’s gorgeous, but I do have to blot a few times since it’s pretty intense against my NW 15 skintone. I’m still debating whether to get Ming though. It looks pink on your lips, but I swatched it and it looked kinda orange. How do you think it’ll look on me? I have quite pigmented strawberry colored lips.

  40. Hmm, do you know if they’re keeping the Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss or if they’re being discontinued as well? I still have a few shades on my wishlist, so it’s good to know. >_>

    • As far as I know, they are still permanent, and only Triomphal (holiday shade) is listed as limited edition on their website!

      • Then I’m glad! I got an e-mail from them for holiday lips, and they listed Exces as limited edition. I was all o_O; NOOOOOOOO

        • Chanel’s site is a little wonky, but if you go to the product page for them and click the tab “limited edition” just Triomphal shows up!

          • Aaaaah that’s why. Thank you for clarifying! I guess my wallet can breathe a little now… (Or not, since I’m lemming at Dior’s European holiday lipsticks. 451 Cinderella looks AMAZING)

  41. Lunohodik

OMG! i was on vacation when these news came by… man, I should’ve bought back ups for this baby in the duty free… gosh, I’m frustrated… why they always discontinue the best stuff???

  42. I finally got off my butt and bought this since it’s disappearing, and I LOVE. WTF have I been waiting for?! Thanks for the heads up!

  43. sara

Love this red on you! Can you recommend a chanel lipliner for this, cuivre, carmin?

  44. lunohodik

    Ok guys:)
here is my story of HUNTING THE DRAGON:)))

I just got back ups for this baby in Frankfurt duty-free:) 26 euro per 1 dragon

So… the story goes like this-In Canada I wasn’t able to find it anywhere, my last and desperate hope was the toronto duty-free, but SA there said that it was available until last week, but this week Chanel representatives or whoever they are took even the dragons that were in stock out. the official excuse for such an idiotic I’d say act was – they are discontinuing the old stuff and emptying the shelves for the new ones, they dont want it to be cluttered…

later in frankfurt, I went to check out the chanel make-up counter just for kicks and grins, and -viola, they have it! and more than that lady there said she never heard of the discontinue news and said that as long as she knows all the classic colors, from the permanent collection won’t be discontinued… but again it was just a chanel SA, my info might be wrong…
btw frankfurt duty-free had a lot of goodies that was so hard to find in Canada:) like some shades of nailpolishes and waterproof stylos…
I’m not saying you should rush to Europe to get it, but just bear in mind the info:)

  45. Vic

Ugh!!! I’ve been working too much to check this site frequently and just saw this post. Finally decided to buy this shade (I love love love reds) and it’s sold out everywhere. Not even on ebay. Le sigh :(

  46. Niki

Do you think this would suit an nc42 skin tone? I’m worried it’ll be too blue or too bright for my coloring.

  47. Jessica

Hi Christine, I’ve only started to follow your blog recently and thank god I came by this post about the Rouge Laques. I have it in Santal and already dashed out and bought 1 back-up. I was wondering, how long would it take to finish one laque? I don’t use it everyday but almost every weekend. I want to know if I should go and get a second back-up. I only came to appreciate this laque lipstick a month ago and they’re discontinuing now! I tried hunting them down in Bloomie’s, only two Dragon is left in the entire counter!

  48. I was able to buy Phoenix at Macy’s in Metairie, LA the other day. I bought Ming online through Saks.

  49. Vannie

Just got this today! Thank god for Bloomingdales.
However, I noticed my wand isnt as clean as yours, do you think it’s used then if the product is everywhere :C
It makes me sad, there were also fingerprints all over the lipgloss!

  50. Melissa

Oh no! I can’t find it anywhere! I was going to try to duplicate it (I make my own makeup for funsies). Guess I’ll have to go by the beautiful pictures you’ve posted!

  51. Alison

I don’t understand WHY they would discontinue this! Its so classic and very Chanel.

  52. tulika

you have to try laura mercier’s seduction lipstick, it looks a lot like chanel’s dragon

  53. Hey there, well needless to say its quite amazing you’ve essentially depleted the last of Chanel’s stock through your love of this color… How great! I just wanted to post to ask if you have sampled NYX’s Snow White? I was completely disappointed to discover the discontinuation, but ordered this lippie for a few dollars, and find it to be a very close dupe for Dragon :) of course, minus the staying power of Chanel. I would love to see what you think!

  54. fiona

you look so gorgeous in this color!Attracted by such great red, I have bought one as well and I do love it ,but I don’t know why it looks rather Rose-carmine in my lip,I am quite puzzle about it.

    • fiona

anyway, will you post some sheer blushes and bronzers reviews of the giorgio armani? These products are so hot recently~I am looking forward to see your looks with these good products~

  55. Alicia

The shade really does look amazing. FYI, NeimanMarcus.com has it listed as backordered, with a ‘no later than’ date of 1/20/12. I ordered two, sight unseen! I also checked eBay; sheer & utter madness, with the cheapest Dragon going for $75!

  56. Kuz

I know that Chanel Dragon is being discontinued, and also that favourite shades are oh so hard to replace, but I read a post this morning over on KarlaSugar that I thought you might be interested in:

    • Thanks for sharing! The differences are what make Dragon so great – there are a lot more reds that are like the new Le Metier de Beaute one from what I can tell – the depth of the red in Dragon is why I love it so!

  57. Michelle

I was able to find it at my local Dillard’s, and they had a couple left. Keep looking for this color in stores, don’t give up just yet everyone!

  58. JaclynAngela

Hey Christine, so I know this is kind of late, but I also know how frustrating it is to have one of your favourite products discontinued. Anyways, I live in Vancouver and we actually still have Dragon (and about 5 other Rouge Allure Laque shades.. I am pretty sure, following the typical logic of brands, that all of Canada still has these as well!) so I know you probably still have your back ups, but I just wanted to let you know it is still available here (in case you ever visit/have family and/or friends living here or visiting!)
